Known for their diversity and popularity, Colorado hunting seasons attract new hunters from across the country every year. If you’re lucky enough to be participating in the upcoming Colorado hunting seasons, whether it’s big game like bear, deer, elk, etc. or smaller game like sheep, goat, deer and turkey, here are a few things you should know about each species and how to prepare for the hunt.

Elk Season

Colorado is famous for its abundant elk population, and elk hunting is a major draw for hunters. There are different elk hunting seasons based on the hunting method: archery, muzzleloader, and rifle. These seasons typically span from September to November.

Similar to elk hunting, deer hunting in Colorado is also divided into various seasons based on hunting methods. You’ll find archery, muzzleloader, and rifle seasons for both mule deer and white-tailed deer.

    Pronghorn Antelope Season

Small Game and Upland Bird Seasons

Colorado offers a variety of small game and upland bird hunting opportunities. Species such as rabbits, squirrels, grouse, and pheasants are commonly hunted during their respective seasons.

    Waterfowl Season

Colorado’s wetlands and water bodies attract a wide range of waterfowl species, making waterfowl hunting another popular pursuit. Duck and goose hunting seasons are usually scheduled in the fall and winter months.

    Predator and Furbearer Seasons

Colorado also allows hunting of predators like coyotes and foxes, as well as trapping furbearers such as beavers, bobcats, and raccoons. These seasons often have more flexibility in terms of timing.

Mountain Lion and Black Bear Seasons

Hunting seasons for mountain lions and black bears are also part of Colorado’s offerings. These seasons can vary, and obtaining the necessary permits and adhering to regulations is crucial.

    Black Bear

      • 2023 September rifle limited (by draw) – September 2-30
      • 2023 Muzzleloader (over-the-counter and/or limited) – September 9-17

    Mountain Lion

It’s important to note that hunting regulations, seasons, and bag limits can change from year to year. Before planning a hunting trip for the upcoming Colorado hunting seasons, check the official Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) website for the most current and accurate information about specific hunting units, draw processes, license requirements, and more.

Furthermore, ethical hunting practices, safety measures, and respect for wildlife and public lands are essential aspects of hunting in Colorado or any other location. Always make sure to follow all regulations, obtain the necessary licenses and permits, and prioritize safety during your hunting adventures.
