Colorado New Concealed Carry Law in 2025: What Changed and Where to Train

If you are planning to carry concealed in Colorado, 2025 brought important updates that affect your class choice, testing, and where you can legally carry. Below is a clear guide to the new rules and why Centennial Gun Club is a smart place to earn your permit.

What changed on July 1, 2025?
Colorado’s House Bill 24-1174 established statewide standards for concealed handgun training. New applicants must complete an in-person class taught by a sheriff-verified instructor within one year of applying. The initial class must provide at least eight hours of instruction and include both a written exam and a live-fire qualification. Renewal applicants must show current competence, which can include completing a shorter in-person refresher class with a written exam and live-fire test (which can be done at Centennial Gun Club’s range)

What must the training cover?
The law spells out required topics: firearm and ammunition safety, secure storage and child safety, shooting fundamentals, relevant state and federal laws, lawful use of deadly force, best practices for interacting with responding officers, and conflict avoidance skills. You must pass both the written exam and the range qualification to complete the class.

Who can teach your class?
Your instructor must be verified by a county sheriff. Verification requires instructor credentials from a law enforcement agency, college or university, nationally recognized training organization, or a firearms training school, plus a valid permit. Counties are posting lists of verified instructors, and classes must be held fully in person.

Where you cannot carry, even with a permit
Since July 1, 2024, Colorado has expanded “sensitive spaces” where carrying firearms is prohibited, openly or concealed. These include state legislative buildings, local government buildings and courthouses, licensed child care centers, K-12 schools, colleges and universities, and election facilities such as polling places and ballot drop box areas. Penalties apply for violations, with narrow exceptions.

Do you still need a background check to buy a gun if you have a permit?
Yes. A Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit does not replace the background check required for each firearm purchase in the state.

Why Choose Centennial Gun Club for Your New Concealed Carry Permit class

Meets the new standards
Centennial Gun Club’s Concealed Handgun Permit course is built as a classroom plus range experience and is presented as meeting the training standards in HB24-1174, including in-person delivery and live-fire work. That alignment helps ensure your certificate satisfies the new application window and content requirements.

Structured path for skill building
Because the state now requires tested competence, showing up prepared matters. Centennial positions the CHP class for students who already have basic handgun handling, and they recommend prior skills training so you arrive ready to pass both written and live-fire components. This staged approach supports better outcomes under the new exam and qualification rules.

Range time and real-world context
The course combines legal, safety, and situational awareness topics with hands-on range time, matching the law’s emphasis on fundamentals and judgment. You leave with practical guidance on interacting with law enforcement and avoiding conflict, both of which are now explicitly required in approved training.

Convenient scheduling
Centennial regularly lists upcoming 8-hour CHP dates so you can complete the class within the one-year application window. Consistent offerings make it easier to stay compliant with the deadline in the new statute.
