DEFENSIVE SHOTGUN

Want to be a proficient with a shotgun?

CLASS DESCRIPTION

In the Defensive Shotgun course, we know you want to be comfortable and skilled with the shotgun capabilities for home defense or hunting sports.  In order to do that, you need the knowledge, experience and the right defensive mindset.

At Centennial Gun Club, we understand with this type of gun and tool, everyone learns at their own level. Don’t let this diminish your motivation. Your strength exists in your willingness to try a new and effective firearm. The shotgun is an excellent tool for home defense and most of the demand is to hone-in “your” mindset and the willingness to try a new and trusted firearm.

Here’s how we do it:
1. Physical drills and firearm basics
2. Essential mindset focus
3. Techniques: ammo, grip, stance, trigger pull, recoil, targets, etc.

The course includes a demonstration of various shot-shells fired at drywall barriers, simulating the interior of a home, to determine wall penetration of various shotgun loads. Students will understand the wide range of ammunition available for the shotgun and which are best for their particular use.

We cover basics such as:
  1. Stance, grip, sight picture
  2. Trigger pull and follow through with emphasis on recoil management
  3. Discussion of accessories, the use of a sling, and close quarters carry techniques
  4. Multiple targets
Range time included in the class includes:
  1. Moving targets
  2. Range drills addressing multiple targets
  3. Patterning your shotgun with birdshot, buckshot, and slugs at various ranges
  4. Understanding the spread of projectiles at different distances
There’s an important lesson and that lesson is gun-fitting.  Proper shooting form and gun fit can go a very long way.  To limit the effects of recoil, many shooters have their guns custom fitted or choose a gun that fits well in the first place.

The course is a prerequisite to Deadly Accuracy

Course Objectives:
Objective 1: Understand Defensive Shotgun basics including equipment, ammunition and firearm basics.
Objective 2: Provide an understanding of the many types of ammunition available for the shotgun, their uses and selection of appropriate ammunition for your application.
Objective 3: Gain an understanding of slings, ready carry techniques and close quarters combat with a long gun.
Objective 4: Discuss and understand shotgun loading and keeping the gun running with multiple targets.
Objective 5: Understand how to manage shotgun recoil and quickly recover the sights to address multiple targets.

The track record of shotguns as a personal protection gun is well-documented. The shotgun is very adept at a defensive role. Consider the per-shot effectiveness of the shotgun. Six rounds in a shotgun may seem like very few, but each of those six rounds is several times as effective as any handgun round.

There is no better comfort than to know you have the right tools and skills for your home defense.
